Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Unveils New Evaluation System for FBR Officers

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif officially launched a new Performance Management System for officers of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Friday, urging tax officials to contribute wholeheartedly toward strengthening Pakistan’s economy and reducing dependence on external debt.

Speaking at a special event at the FBR Headquarters, Prime Minister Shehbaz stressed the importance of domestic revenue generation, highlighting that financial independence cannot be achieved without significant improvement in tax collection.

“If we truly want Pakistan to stand on its own feet, we must strengthen our revenue system and lessen our reliance on international financial support,” the premier said.

Recognition and a Call for Continued Reform

Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged a 27% increase in FBR’s revenue compared to the previous year, crediting the efforts of tax officers and the Ministry of Finance. However, he emphasized the need for further reforms to eliminate inefficiencies and bring more individuals and businesses into the formal tax network.

The new system, designed to monitor and assess the performance of FBR officers, is expected to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency. The Prime Minister indicated that similar systems would soon be rolled out in other government departments to promote a culture based on merit and measurable results.

Digital Transformation in Tax Administration

During the event, officials from Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL) briefed the Prime Minister on ongoing digital initiatives, including electronic invoicing, automated tax return processing, and the use of big data to identify tax evasion.

He was told that integration efforts with national databases, such as those maintained by NADRA and financial institutions, have already led to the registration of over 35 new companies in the tax system.

Prime Minister Shehbaz also visited the newly established FBR Delivery Unit, where he interacted with staff and reviewed operational procedures. He praised the team’s dedication and described FBR officers as essential contributors to the country’s economic future.

Under the new evaluation system, officers’ performance will directly influence their career growth and financial rewards. This marks a shift towards a more performance-oriented public service model.

Vision for a Stronger Economy

Concluding his address, Shehbaz reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transforming the FBR into a modern, high-performing institution. He expressed hope that such reforms would contribute to long-term economic stability and reduce the country’s dependence on foreign debt.
