ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has clarified that taxpayers’ active status will be determined based on the filing of income tax returns for Tax Year 2024, dismissing media reports suggesting mass removal of taxpayers from the Active Taxpayers List (ATL).
According to an official statement issued by the FBR, no taxpayer who submitted an extension application within the prescribed deadline has been declared inactive. The revenue authority emphasized that the ATL for 2025 will include all those who filed returns for Tax Year 2024, along with new filers for Tax Year 2025 up to November 15, 2025.
The FBR further stated that all taxpayers who applied for an extension through the online system have been automatically granted a 15-day extension under the instructions of the FBR Chairman.
In line with recent amendments to the Income Tax Rules, manual return filing has been discontinued. However, taxpayers who filed manual returns last year are being provided a one-month facilitation period to switch to electronic filing. Regional Tax Offices (RTOs) have been directed to extend full support to such taxpayers to ensure a seamless transition.
The statement also advised taxpayers who missed the initial deadline that they may still submit an online extension application until November 15, 2025, explaining valid reasons for the delay to their respective Commissioners.
Reiterating its commitment to ease of compliance, the FBR said it remains dedicated to facilitating genuine filers, maintaining transparency, and strengthening digital tax administration systems.
