Karachi Customs Busts Smuggling of 564 Mobile Phones, Tampered Prado Worth Rs96 Million

KARACHI: The Collectorate of Customs Enforcement Karachi has intercepted a major smuggling attempt, seizing 564 high-end mobile phones and a tampered Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, with a total estimated value of Rs96 million. The operation, based on precise intelligence, took place near the Karachi–Hyderabad Toll Plaza.

The Prado (Registration No. BF-7199) was stopped after authorities received credible information indicating it had been illegally imported. The occupants failed to present any lawful import documentation. Initial inspection revealed suspicious welding marks on the bonnet, front bumper, and side fenders, prompting a detailed examination.

The vehicle was transported to Karachi Custom House, where officers discovered five hidden compartments containing 564 mobile phones from popular brands like Google Pixel and Motorola, collectively worth Rs64 million. Forensic checks confirmed that the Prado itself, valued at approximately Rs32 million, had been tampered with and was non-duty-paid.

All seized items have been confiscated under the Customs Act, 1969. An FIR has been registered, and investigations are ongoing to trace the network behind this sophisticated smuggling operation. Authorities stressed that such intelligence-driven actions are part of ongoing efforts to curb smuggling and safeguard lawful trade in Pakistan.

Customs officials also urged businesses and the public to adhere strictly to import regulations and warned that any violation of customs laws would attract stringent action. This seizure represents one of the largest anti-smuggling operations in Karachi in recent months.
