LARKANA: Chairman of the Sindh Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, has warned that provinces should not be penalised for the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) inefficiencies in tax collection.
Speaking at a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) meeting in Shikarpur, Larkana division, Khuhro opposed any reduction in the National Finance Commission (NFC) award under the pretext of federal tax shortfalls.
Khuhro suggested that if the FBR is unable to recover taxes effectively, the federal government should delegate the authority to Sindh to collect taxes on services and goods. “Sindh will demonstrate its capability,” he said, emphasising that the Sindh Revenue Board (SRB) is fully competent to undertake this role. Any additional revenue collected would be transferred back to the federal government, he added.
Highlighting the SRB’s track record, Khuhro said the board already recovers over Rs300 billion annually from Sindh. He reminded the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government that while the constitution permits an increase in the NFC share, any reduction is prohibited. “The PPP will defend the provinces’ rights as guaranteed under the 18th Constitutional Amendment,” he asserted.
