CJP Afridi Calls for Fast-Tracking High-Value Tax Cases to Protect Economy

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi has urged better coordination between tax authorities and the judiciary, stressing the urgent need to prioritise and fast-track long-pending, high-value tax cases. He also highlighted the importance of establishing a permanent institutional framework to resolve such disputes, according to an official Supreme Court statement.

The remarks came during a high-level meeting chaired by the CJP on Saturday, focusing on creating a sustained mechanism to address complex tax litigation efficiently. The meeting included Supreme Court Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, FBR Chairman, the FBR’s legal member, and other senior officials.

Participants discussed strategies to reduce case backlogs, enhance legal certainty, and safeguard public revenue. The chief justice noted, “Prolonged tax litigation not only constrains fiscal space but also undermines investor confidence and economic stability.” He emphasised the judiciary’s role in supporting reforms that ensure timely justice, efficiency, and predictability, particularly in cases with a direct impact on the national economy.

Key points of discussion included prioritising high-stake cases, improving coordination between the FBR and judiciary, strengthening legal preparedness, and exploring procedural measures to ensure consistency and speed in adjudication. The meeting forms part of a broader justice sector reform agenda aimed at reducing systemic delays and aligning judicial processes with Pakistan’s economic and development goals.
