ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced plans to launch a strict crackdown on sellers marketing smuggled and non-custom-paid goods through social media platforms.
According to FBR sources, starting January 1, tax authorities will begin closely monitoring social media accounts involved in the sale of contraband items and compile detailed information on such sellers. Officials will pose as customers to engage with sellers, collect mobile numbers, email addresses, and other identifying details to trace those involved.
A wide array of smuggled items is reportedly being sold online, including electronics, household appliances, footwear and clothing, cosmetics and beauty tools, chocolates, toffees, chewing gum, bedding, carpets, tyres, auto parts, laptops, Chromebooks, computers, kitchen appliances such as stoves and ovens, crockery, juicers, dry fruits, imported foods, olive oil, furniture, decorative items, tiles, and sanitary fittings.
FBR sources added that sellers will be traced using their mobile numbers and email addresses, with assistance from NADRA for identity verification. Notices will be issued, and enforcement teams will locate associated shops and warehouses to initiate further legal action.
In a statement, the FBR reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening enforcement through effective intelligence gathering and inter-agency coordination to curb smuggling and protect the national economy.
Previously, the FBR had also initiated a nationwide crackdown targeting tax evaders flaunting luxury lifestyles on social media. The Social Media Monitoring Team has already collected extensive data on individuals showcasing extravagant lifestyles online but failing to file income tax returns.
