Govt Aims to pass Budget before Ashura, may Suspend Weekend Holiday

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to complete the approval of the Federal Budget 2026-27 before Ashura, with plans to continue parliamentary budget proceedings without interruption until the Finance Bill is passed.

According to sources, the National Assembly’s budget session will continue on a daily basis from June 12, with the government considering the suspension of regular Saturday and Sunday breaks to expedite the legislative process.

Officials told media that the government is targeting June 23 or June 24 for the final approval of the federal budget, ensuring that the Finance Bill is passed before the commencement of major Ashura observances in Muharram.

The decision reflects the government’s intention to avoid delays in parliamentary proceedings during a sensitive religious period while maintaining momentum on key fiscal legislation.

The upcoming budget is being finalized amid significant economic challenges, including efforts to achieve ambitious revenue collection targets, manage public expenditures, and fulfill commitments made under Pakistan’s economic reform program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Sources said authorities are keen to complete the budget process within the scheduled timeframe as discussions continue over taxation measures, development spending, provincial resource allocations, and other key fiscal priorities for the next financial year.

Recent weeks have seen several changes to the broader budget timetable due to ongoing consultations on economic policies and budgetary allocations. Against this backdrop, uninterrupted budget sittings are expected to help ensure smooth passage of the Finance Bill and provide certainty regarding fiscal measures for 2026-27.

The government is expected to push for swift parliamentary approval of the budget to avoid any overlap with Muharram-related activities and maintain continuity in legislative proceedings.
