LTO Karachi Shatters Records with Rs2.56 Trillion Tax Haul in Ten Months

The Large Taxpayers Office (LTO) in Karachi has announced a landmark achievement in revenue generation, collecting an unprecedented Rs2.56 trillion in the first ten months of the current fiscal year (July 2024 – April 2025). This remarkable performance solidifies LTO Karachi’s critical position in bolstering Pakistan’s financial stability and supporting national economic progress.

Significant Growth in Revenue Collection

Sources within the LTO confirmed on Wednesday that the net tax collection represents a substantial 27% increase compared to the Rs2 trillion gathered during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. This surge highlights the effectiveness of LTO Karachi’s strategies in expanding the tax net and improving adherence to tax regulations among major contributors.

Adding to this commendable feat, LTO Karachi also processed and disbursed Rs114 billion in refunds to taxpayers during these ten months. This action underscores the office’s commitment to maintaining transparency and fostering a cooperative relationship with taxpayers.

Direct Taxes Lead the Charge

As the primary revenue collection body under the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), LTO Karachi continues to raise the bar for fiscal performance. A closer look at the revenue composition indicates that direct taxes have been the main engine of this success. Collections from direct taxes saw a robust 28% rise, reaching an impressive Rs1.37 trillion between July and April, a significant jump from Rs1.07 trillion recorded in the same timeframe last year.

Strong Performance in Indirect Taxes

LTO Karachi’s exceptional performance was also evident in the realm of indirect taxes. Sales tax revenues surpassed the Rs1 trillion threshold, marking a healthy 22% growth from the Rs839 billion collected in the prior fiscal period. Notably, sales tax on domestic goods and services climbed by a significant 30%, while sales tax collected at the import stage increased by 14%, signaling an uptick in economic activity and enhanced tax administration within Karachi.

Furthermore, the collection of Federal Excise Duty (FED) witnessed an extraordinary surge of 55%, escalating to Rs172 billion from Rs111 billion in the preceding year. This outstanding growth emphasizes LTO Karachi’s vital contribution to augmenting federal revenues and driving the nation’s economic development.

A Cornerstone of National Fiscal Health

In summary, the stellar tax collection figures reported by LTO Karachi for the first ten months of FY25 underscore its indispensable role within Pakistan’s revenue framework. This achievement is pivotal in fostering economic expansion and securing the nation’s fiscal sustainability for the years to come.
