Pakistan, Bangladesh Explore Ways to Strengthen Trade and Tax Cooperation

Bangladesh High Commissioner to Pakistan Md Iqbal Hussain Khan on Monday met Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Rashid Mahmood Langrial to discuss measures aimed at boosting bilateral trade, enhancing tax cooperation, and deepening overall economic relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

According to an official statement, both sides reaffirmed the longstanding and cordial relations between the two brotherly countries and expressed their commitment to expanding economic and financial collaboration. The talks focused on trade facilitation, improved exchange of tax-related information, and greater alignment of fiscal policies to support growing commercial ties.

It was agreed that technical teams from both countries dealing with international taxation would engage in detailed discussions on the existing Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA). The objective is to review and update the treaty in line with evolving global tax standards and international best practices, with an emphasis on transparency and the prevention of tax evasion.

The meeting coincided with a five-day official visit by a high-level delegation of Bangladesh’s National Board of Revenue (NBR), scheduled from December 22 to 26. The visit marks the formal launch of negotiations on a protocol to amend the current convention between the two countries for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of tax evasion on income taxes.

On the first day of the visit, the Bangladeshi delegation was received by FBR Member (Administration) Iqbal Khan and Director General (International Taxes) Aftab Alam. Initial sessions focused on technical aspects of international taxation, with both sides exchanging views on policy frameworks, administrative practices, and compliance mechanisms.
