Tax Professionals Condemn FM’s Remarks on Return Filing Without Legal Aid

The Sargodha Tax Bar Association (STBA) has issued a strong condemnation of recent remarks made by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb during his budget speech, where he suggested that taxpayers would no longer require the services of lawyers or tax practitioners to file their returns. The statement has sparked widespread disapproval within the legal and tax professional community across the country.

In immediate response to the minister’s comments, the STBA convened an emergency meeting of its Cabinet and Executive Committee on June 12, 2025. Chaired by President Muhammad Tasauwar Mufti, an Income Tax Practitioner (ITP), the meeting served as a platform to analyze the implications of the minister’s statement and formulate a unified stance on behalf of tax advisors.

Disapproval Over Perceived Redundancy of Professionals

During the session, members of the STBA voiced serious concern and strong disapproval over the finance minister’s assertion that, moving forward, “there will be no need for any advocate or tax consultants” in the tax return filing process. The association unanimously agreed that these remarks were not only unwarranted but also demonstrated a profound lack of appreciation for the vital role tax professionals play within Pakistan’s increasingly intricate taxation system.

The STBA emphasized that while simplifying the tax return filing process is indeed a commendable and positive goal, implying the redundancy of tax practitioners undermines their specialized expertise, the extensive effort they put in, and the significant trust taxpayers place in professional advisors to ensure full compliance with complex tax laws. The association warned that such public statements risk discouraging taxpayers from seeking essential professional tax guidance, which could ultimately lead to adverse consequences for both individual taxpayers and the national revenue collection efforts.

Call for Clarification and Broader Support

In a show of solidarity with the broader tax community across Pakistan, the STBA announced its full support for the letters already submitted by various other tax bars to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. These letters collectively call for an immediate clarification and, crucially, a retraction of the finance minister’s controversial remarks.

Furthermore, the Sargodha Tax Bar Association has urged the Pakistan Tax Bar Association (PTBA), the apex body representing tax professionals nationwide, to take urgent notice of the issue. The STBA has called upon the PTBA to raise this matter at the highest forums available to effectively defend the integrity and acknowledge the indispensable contribution of tax professionals across the country. The STBA reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the pivotal role of legal tax advisors and ensuring that their collective voice is duly respected in all national financial policymaking.
