The government of Pakistan is optimistic about achieving its full-year tax collection target after the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) successfully exceeded its revenue goal for July. The FBR provisionally collected over Rs754 billion for the month, surpassing the assigned target of Rs748 billion. This positive start to the fiscal year has been attributed to the ongoing reforms within the FBR.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while chairing a weekly review meeting in Islamabad, expressed his satisfaction with the increase in the tax-to-GDP ratio, highlighting it as a direct outcome of the reform measures implemented by the FBR. He affirmed his full support for these reforms, pledging to eliminate bureaucratic and institutional hurdles to ensure their consistent implementation.
Unified Strategy for Sustained Growth
In a push to sustain the momentum of tax collection, the Prime Minister called for a coordinated and integrated strategy between the federal and provincial governments. He emphasized that the effective and efficient implementation of already-levied taxes is crucial for further boosting revenue in the current fiscal year.
The Prime Minister also directed the FBR to develop a comprehensive strategy, in consultation with relevant federal agencies and provinces, to further improve the tax-to-GDP ratio.
Simplification and Digitization for Enhanced Compliance
During the meeting, it was revealed that in a move to make tax filing more accessible, the income tax returns form has been made available online in Urdu, a direct directive from the Prime Minister. This simplification is expected to benefit approximately 84% of filers.
The meeting also provided an update on the digitization efforts of the customs clearance system. The establishment of digital enforcement stations is underway on a priority basis. Authorities were informed that the full implementation of the Centralized Assessment Unit (CAU) and a “faceless customs system” will significantly enhance the efficiency and transparency of the customs clearance process.
Additionally, PM Shehbaz Sharif urged the FBR and customs clearance departments to collaborate with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to raise public awareness about the reformed system and its benefits.
