FTO Zafar Hijazi Pledges Protection for Business Community and Taxpayers

RAWALPINDI: Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) Zafar-ul-Haq Hijazi has assured the business community that their rights will be fully protected and their concerns addressed promptly. Speaking during a visit to the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) on Friday, he described taxpayers as the “real benefactors” of the country, especially amid the economic challenges Pakistan is currently facing.

FTO Hijazi emphasized that relief-oriented measures are being introduced to safeguard taxpayers. He stated that upcoming budget proposals are aimed at ending harassment of tax filers and streamlining procedures. Highlighting a recent reform, he informed participants that the process for registering complaints against the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and filing appeals has now been shortened to just one day. “Complaints will now be reviewed and appeals scheduled within a single day,” he said, stressing that providing maximum relief to businessmen is his top priority.

RCCI President Usman Shauka highlighted the significance of the FTO as a key institution and praised its role in resolving traders’ issues efficiently. He noted that the office has been instrumental in addressing the challenges faced by the business community.

Sohail Altaf, Group Leader at RCCI, added that business confidence in the FTO has strengthened considerably. He clarified that traders do not oppose paying taxes, but their concerns relate to FBR procedures. He also pointed out that businesses, acting as withholding agents, collect and deposit taxes on behalf of FBR without compensation or acknowledgment. He urged that the business community be recognized as partners in tax collection.

Traders attending the event expressed optimism that the Federal Tax Ombudsman’s office would effectively address their issues.

The event was attended by senior RCCI officials including Senior Vice President Khalid Farooq Qazi, Vice President Fahad Barlas, former presidents, Executive Committee members, and Vice President of FPCCI Tariq Jadoon, along with a large gathering of chamber members.
