Taxpayers to Receive Official WhatsApp Messages from FBR

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced that it will begin sending official messages to taxpayers via WhatsApp as part of its efforts to improve communication and encourage tax compliance.

A notice posted on the FBR’s official website on Monday informed taxpayers that they will now receive WhatsApp messages from the official number +92 326 8336425. These messages will relate to return filing reminders, declarations, and other compliance-related updates.

The FBR has already been utilizing SMS alerts to engage with taxpayers, particularly those involved in the purchase and sale of real estate. For example, individuals have received messages congratulating them on property transactions and advising them to report such assets in their wealth statements when filing returns.

A sample message reads:

“Dear taxpayer, congratulations on your property purchase(s) in the tax year ending June 30, 2025. Please file your income tax return and declare this in your wealth statement with adequate income to remain compliant.”

In addition to property transactions, messages are also being sent regarding high-value purchases such as vehicles, credit card expenditures, and unusually large credits in bank accounts. While these notifications currently serve as compliance nudges, experts caution that they may also form the basis for future audit selections.

Taxpayers are advised to review their financial data carefully and ensure accuracy in their tax filings. Inconsistencies or undeclared assets could trigger further scrutiny or lead to additional notices from the tax authorities.

The FBR’s enhanced use of digital communication reflects a broader push to increase documentation and transparency within the tax system through third-party data integration.
